One main purpose of this blog is to facilitate renewed interest in Thomas Chalmers, the great 19th century Scottish preacher, churchman, and social reformer. I am convinced that he needs to be rediscovered again, especially in the place of his spiritual birth – the Reformed community.
As a small contribution to getting the word out, I’ve decided to make a special offer. I am going to give away 5 copies of W. M. Mackay’s Thomas Chalmers: A Short Appreciation randomly to church leaders or those preparing for the ministry. For the next two weeks, from today until January 21, anyone who would like to get a free copy can enter the drawing by e-mailing me (michael@reformedparish.com) with your name & e-mail address. If you are selected, I’ll let you know on Jan. 22 and will then request your mailing address.
If you aren’t a church leader, feel free to check back in a week. If I don’t get many responses, I’ll open it up to anyone.
WOW!! Thanks so much. I dropped you an email.
[…] Michael Ives, over at West Port Experiment, is giving away five copies of John Mackay’s Thomas Chalmers: A Short Appreciation. Michael has done a good bit of blogging about Chalmers–specifically in regard to Chalmers’ focus on deaconal mercy ministry. You can find out more about the giveaway here. […]
Hello, wonderful idea.
I suppose I would fall under the title ‘missionary’ to Bhutan.
Any copies left?
Also, looking for more info on the doctors works at WestPort.
What a way to end a life of ministering.
Really, one of the church’s greatest heroes.
Patrick,
Well, I’m afraid all my spare copies have gone to the four corners. However, they are very inexpensive where they are stocked.
But I’m happy to say that there is a lot that can be done for free at home through googlebooks. For example, you can read the entirety of Hanna’s classic Memoirs of Thomas Chalmers – if you’re interested in the West Port story, there is a whole chapter devoted to it – http://books.google.com/books?id=jRkNAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=editions:0A4ltAuIwQcu_iWa#PPA385,M1
The Lord be with you in your labors to His praise.
